“Make[s] this specific story an effective microcosmic portrait of the vast political, social and economic changes endured by the region.” – Hollywood Reporter
The original challenge of Power Trip was how to humanize the monumental post-Soviet transition from communism to capitalism. Once we collected those human stories in over 200 hours of footage, the editing challenge became how to create an entertaining narrative out of such complex material.
Apparently we succeeded. The New York Times described Power Trip as “superbly balanced and organized.” LA Weekly agreed: “The triumph of filmmaker Paul Devlin (SlamNation) is in finding a narrative through-line that clarifies this horrendously complicated situation without oversimplifying its issues.”
This scene gives a sense of the mess that we found in Tbilisi.
